Engineering mailing lists up until 2024 were based on Mailman version 2. Starting in 2024, new lists are created in Mailman version 3 and old ones are slowly being migrated there as well.
One big difference between the old mailman (version 2) and our new version (3) is how it handles passwords and ‘accounts’. With version 2, there is a per-list administrator password. And, each list member has a password that can be different for each list they are in.
With mailman version 3, one creates an account on the list server. Then your account can have multiple email addresses associated with it (ONID, ENGR, etc) — and your account might be assigned administrator for one list and member of other lists. Please do not use your ONID password within mailman.
The Mailman 3 server is lists.engr.oregonstate.edu. Email addresses for Mailman 3 lists will be in the form 'listname@lists.engr.oregonstate.edu'.
The URL to use for Mailman 3 is https://lists.engr.oregonstate.edu/mailman3/lists/<listname> -- where <listname> would be the full email address of the list. For example, if the list were 'mytestlist@lists.engr.oregonstate.edu', the URL would be https://lists.engr.oregonstate.edu/mailman3/lists/mytestlist@lists.engr.oregonstate.edu. That URL would be used to 'Sign up' for an account within Mailman 3 -- or to 'Sign in' to an existing account. Once you sign in, if you are an admin, you would be offered administrative options. Or if you are just a member, you would be offered options related to the lists you are a member of.
List members do not need to create an account in order to receive emails. The account is only needed for members if they wish to change the behavior of their memberships.
